Boston Ballet‘s latest production of Coppélia is the perfect theater experience for the whole family! This full-length Balanchine classic is quick-paced and full of laughs, talented dancing, and stunning costumes accompanied by a live orchestra.

The story of Coppélia follows a young couple, Swanhilda and Frantz, who get roped up in a series of antics with the rest of the townspeople when Frantz mistakenly falls for a life-size (and life-like!) doll crafted by Doctor Coppélius, With choreography by George Balanchine, live music by the Boston Ballet Orchestra led by Music Director Mischa Santora, and of course incredible dancing by the Boston Ballet Company and students from the Boston Ballet School, Coppélia offers all the thrills of a live theatrical experience the whole family can enjoy.

One of my favorite parts of seeing any ballet is seeing all the beautiful costumes, and Coppélia is no exception. If you also love checking out all of the details in the costume design, get to the Boston Opera House early to check out The Warm Up in the lower level. This quick exhibit has information and sample designs for the costumes in Coppélia (designed by Kenneth Busbin). There are even paper dolls, photo ops, and other activities for kids to learn about the costume design before the show starts!

Coppélia‘s lighthearted nature and festive atmosphere (along with two intermissions) make this a really accessible ballet for bring the kids along or for a first-time ballet experience. If you’ve ever been interested in getting more into theater but are intimidated by the whole setting, Coppélia is a great place to start! (I’d liken it to the afternoon tea at Disney’s Grand Floridian— it’s not intimidating at all and it offers a fun and memorable experience if you’re new to traditional tea, or in this case to ballet/theater!)

If you’re visiting Boston with kids, youth tickets (ages 2-17) to Coppélia are also half-off with the purchase of a full-priced ticket. And most of the family-friendly activities in the city (think museums, walking tours, etc..) tend to end by 5:00. So for an evening in Boston, Coppélia can really fill that gap in your itinerary for affordable family fun!
